Briana Simmons, Founding Director
I was born in the heart of the country, Kansas City, MO, to Calvin Brian Simmons and the late Kimberly Yvette Simmons. I'm forever grateful to my parents for never shutting down my curious mind. Now, as a radical visionary, I imagine the world without limitations to our fullest expression of freedom. An intersectional identity informs my perspective and molds my vision of creating new worlds.
After completing my B.S. in Journalism with a minor in international relations at Missouri State University, my path led me to Denver, Colorado. At the University of Denver, I earned a Master's of International Human Rights.
Currently, I'm is the Reproductive Justice Program Manager for Soul 2 Soul Sisters, a Black womxn led, faith-based, racial justice non-profit organization that centers the lives and experiences of Black womxn, and the Interfaith Alliance of Colorado, a faith-based advocacy organization focused on religious liberty, racial justice, and economic justice.
As the founding director of Unearthing Tradition, I’m inspired to do this work because I want child bearing people to have fulfilling birth experiences carefully thought out and decided upon with confidence. I want birth to be a gentle introduction to the physical world. My long-term goal is to become a midwife while continuing community-based activism.
When I'm not working, exploring new places, trying new recipes, anything with an artistic flair, and resting bring me the most joy!
The International Center for Traditional Childbearing
The International Center for Traditional Childbearing, Inc. (ICTC) is a non-profit infant mortality prevention, breastfeeding support, and midwife training organization, comprised of women and men who want to improve birth outcomes and provide training opportunities in the African-American community.
In August 1991, with the support of a national group of midwives and healers, Sr. Shafia Monroe founded the ICTC in Portland, OR. For more than a decade, ICTC has built bridges that link national organizations with grassroots movements and professionals with lay health workers. The organization’s reach is truly international as chapters of ICTC are forming throughout the country and world.
My Birthing Philosophy
At Unearthing Tradition, we acknowledge birth as a rite of passage into parenthood that bridges the gap between the spiritual and physical realms of life. With this honorable space in mind, choosing to have a doula present at your birth is no easy decision, but I can promise that it will be upheld with professionalism and respect.
Birth is one of the most vulnerable and intimate moments one will experience. Unearthing Tradition strives to mitigate fear, lack of support, and/or misinformation during this time. Instead, our goal is to celebrate a fulfilling experience and healthy outcome with you and your family. As your doula, I work directly for you, not for your caregiver, birth center, or hospital. Regardless of how you want to give birth, I’ll be with you every step of the way and support your informed decisions.
My mission as your doula is to ease your transition into parenthood by providing continuous support throughout your journey.
